The State of the Nation: The UK Family Business Sector 2019-20

This report presents a detailed statistical profile of the UK family business sector in 2018 and estimates its contribution to the UK economy in that year: the contribution of family firms to UK gross domestic product and to the public finances; and estimates of the number of people employed by family firms in the UK. The report includes an analysis of family businesses’ performance expectations and their strategies for the future – including new evidence on their investment in research and development (R&D) and innovation activities. Whilst the survey data used in this report were collected prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the report includes some preliminary analysis of the likely impact of the pandemic on the UK's family business sector.
